Smart Take
On-device AI on A20 Pro analyses the scene in real time and captures photos automatically when subjects are posing, so the person holding the phone is not left out of the shot.
An illustration of iPhone Duo opening from its 5.4-inch outer display to the 7.6-inch inner display as you scroll.
Apple's first foldable iPhone: a 7.6-inch display that folds down into a 5.4-inch phone, on a titanium hinge.
iPhone Duo was unveiled on Wednesday, 9 September 2026 at Apple Park during a live-streamed keynote titled “Surprise and Shine”. John Ternus, in his first keynote as CEO, revived Steve Jobs's “one more thing” to reveal it, and called it the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.
The name refers to the two displays and the two batteries. Apple's own tagline: Foldable. Posable. And durable.
A book-style foldable. Closed, it is a short, wide device about the footprint of a passport. Opened, it is closer to a small tablet. Apple describes it as the thinnest iPhone it has made when open, and the largest display it has put on an iPhone.
254 g is 5 g heavier than iPhone 18 Pro Max and 53 g heavier than Galaxy Z Fold 8 — the most-discussed physical trade-off, and the cost of the dual-battery system.
Mirror-polished titanium against a micro-blasted hinge cover is a deliberate two-texture contrast — one of the few purely aesthetic decisions Apple called out.
Putting the volume keys on the top edge means they always follow the direction you press: right for up, left for down. The rails are rounded to give a grip for opening.
To reach 5.2 mm, Apple packaged components into the camera plateau: the raised camera area doubles as internal volume.
Both panels share the same aspect ratio so content scales proportionally rather than reflowing as you open and close the device. Both run ProMotion to 120 Hz, Always On, 1000 nits typical and 3000 nits peak outdoors.
90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro, in a body Apple says is comfortable one-handed and pocketable. The panel is not symmetrical: rounded along the right edge, squared off on the left. At 5.4 inches it is on the small side for the screen you will spend most of the day on, and the asymmetry is the device's most obvious visual flaw. Some buyers will never get past it.
50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max's display. A FaceTime camera sits beneath it, mid-way down the right-hand side, hidden when not in use: a first for iPhone. Closing the camera app dissolves the blacked-out pixels it shoots through back into the wallpaper. Keeping it hidden costs image quality, so it is a trade rather than a free win.
Nano-texture has appeared on Pro Display XDR, Studio Display and iPad Pro, never on an iPhone. It reduces glare and reflections, and it minimises crease visibility: a non-reflective surface has no continuous specular highlight running across it, which is exactly what makes a crease jump out on a glossy foldable. Johny Srouji described a perceptually flat matte surface that feels premium to the touch. Apple says the crease is reduced, not eliminated.
That is a fair description. This is among the least visible creases on any foldable so far, level with the Oppo Find N6. It has not gone — run a finger across the fold and you will find it — but it takes looking for. The coating earns its keep twice over: reflections are a non-issue in bright light however the device is held, and the surface is smooth enough that a finger glides across it.
The hinge controls opening and closing, supports the centre of the display to hold it flat, and works with an integrated magnet array for a secure closure. During manufacturing, AI algorithms match each hinge to its best-fit housing for alignment tolerance. Carbon fibre support plates inside the hinge are reported to contribute to crease minimisation.
The sliding-adhesive approach is the key idea: rather than forcing every layer to bend at the same radius, the layers shear against each other, reducing stress at the fold line.
6 metres for up to 30 minutes (IEC 60529). Water ingress has historically been the weak point of any device with a moving seam; Galaxy Z Fold 8 does not match this, and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the only other foldable rated to IP68. Resistance is not permanent and liquid damage is not covered under warranty.
Scratch resistance versus the previous generation, on the outer display. Apple has not stated how the inner polymer cover compares, and folding polymer covers are historically softer than glass.
Antenna splits are filled with ceramic fibre inserts to restore frame rigidity, solving the usual problem that antenna gaps weaken a frame.
No bespoke foldable silicon, no M-series. A20 Pro uses a new package inspired by M-series: the processor die sits side by side with memory instead of stacking in its thermal path. A custom vapour chamber connects directly to the chip. Apple claims the fastest CPU in a smartphone.
Up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro. Sustained is the operative word: peak performance is easy to reach and hard to hold, and holding it under load is where thin foldables usually fail.
A new display engine drives the inner and outer displays simultaneously and manages the transition as the device opens and closes. Most foldables switch between panels; Duo drives both.
Apple never publishes RAM figures. Third-party databases list 12GB, which matches the reported requirement for the full Siri AI feature set. Likely, but unconfirmed.
A single large cell cannot span a hinge, so Duo carries a high-energy battery on each side. Apple silicon and energy-rebalancing algorithms coordinate charge and discharge so the pair behaves as one battery. Going eSIM-only frees internal volume that goes to capacity; Apple states this explicitly.
The figure to plan around, assuming equal time on both displays. iPhone 18 Pro is rated for 36 hours of video and the Pro Max for 45, so the Duo sits below both.
The 20-minute figure needs a 60W-or-higher USB-C adapter; wireless needs 35W or higher with a MagSafe Charger. No power adapter is in the box. For comparison, iPhone 18 Pro reaches 50 percent in about 15 minutes.
Two 48MP rear cameras, a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer display and an under-display FaceTime camera inside. The “2× Telephoto” is an optical-quality crop from the main sensor, not a separate lens.
Also enables a 12MP optical-quality 2× at 52 mm, ƒ/1.6. New computational image pipeline; low light credited to the large sensor, fast aperture and sensor-shift OIS.
The same Ultra Wide as the iPhone 18 Pro models.
0.5× · 1× · 2×. 4× optical-quality range, 10× digital.
Shoots any orientation without rotating; widens and rotates the frame as people join.
New texture and grain controls in iOS 27. Camera Control launches Siri Camera, which sees what you see.
Five features not possible on any other iPhone, plus a device that stands as its own tripod.
On-device AI on A20 Pro analyses the scene in real time and captures photos automatically when subjects are posing, so the person holding the phone is not left out of the shot.
Take a selfie with the higher-resolution rear cameras while previewing the shot on the outer display, giving a self-portrait main-camera image quality.
Shows the live preview on the outer display, facing your subject, so they can pose, check their own framing and guide the shot themselves.
Plays animations from Peanuts on the outer display to hold a child's attention so they look towards the camera.
People physically with you join the video call on the outer display, so everyone shares the moment without crowding one screen. Dual Capture shares front and rear feeds simultaneously.
Audio Mix isolating music is a meaningful upgrade for anyone shooting at events or performances.
Duo ships with iOS 27.1. Because the open device is wide, Lock Screen controls, the Dock and app navigation move to the sides to preserve vertical space. The status bar becomes a circular system nestled into a corner. Dynamic Island is redesigned to sit vertically along the side of both displays, still expanding for Live Activities.
Those side controls sit on the right, with no setting to move them across, and the dock takes four apps rather than the usual grid.
The transition between the two displays is the part that stands out. The outer screen lights the instant the device shuts, with none of the lag that is normal on a foldable, and opening dissolves whatever you were doing straight onto the larger panel.
When open, the Home Screen shows two pages with Today View, a vertical list of widgets, on the left. The two Home Screens mirror each other: change the layout or add a page on one display and the other follows.
Set Duo down and it enters StandBy on either display, even when not charging, closed or folded. Faces: Clock, Modular, Calendar (new), Weather (new), Photos (now with Shared Albums). Every face gains new colours, fonts and complications.
Posture-aware: content reacts as it folds, reorients when turned, switches display when flipped, and works partially folded in StandBy, landscape, portrait, seated and standing positions, including a laptop-like configuration.
New and updated APIs in the latest SDKs; upcoming iPhone Duo support in Device Hub in Xcode; Apple's own apps optimised at launch. On the inner display, apps lay out like iPad apps, in multiple columns.
Siri AI rolls out in beta with iOS 27, powered by Apple Intelligence; reporting indicates it is Gemini-powered under the hood. It understands personal context across messages, mail and photos, acts on what is on screen, answers with broad world knowledge, writes anywhere you type, and keeps conversations in a dedicated Siri app synced privately via iCloud. On-device processing where possible; Private Cloud Compute for heavier work.
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI beta: Monday 14 September 2026 with iOS 27, English only. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish follow in October 2026. Apple Intelligence itself supports 16 languages including German, Italian, Chinese and Japanese.
Siri AI is not available in the EU at launch on iOS, iPadOS or watchOS. Apple Intelligence is not available in China. Siri AI is not available to users under 13. For a device positioned around AI, that is a significant regional gap.
Siri AI, intelligent photo editing, Image Playground and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts are subject to daily usage limits that vary by feature and demand. Apple has stated expanded access will be available for a fee in the future: the first explicit signal that Apple Intelligence will be monetised beyond hardware.
No SIM tray in any market, including regions where Apple previously kept one; the space goes to battery. eSIM is supported by over 500 carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Travellers who rely on local prepaid SIMs abroad will need to use travel eSIMs instead.
Face ID requires the TrueDepth camera stack, which needs more physical depth than a thin foldable can spare; the omission is attributed to internal space constraints. Side-button Touch ID works identically open or closed. Apple Watch unlock supported. Crash Detection, location sharing, Apple Pay, improved child safety in iOS 27.
Apple Pencil (USB-C) on both displays for notes, sketches and mark-up. Arrives later in 2026, not at launch. Samsung dropped S Pen support with the Z Fold 7.
iPhone Duo Case $79 (Sand, Navy Blue), Folio with Kickstand $129 (Navy Blue, Taupe). MagSafe, Qi2 25W, magnets aligned to the device. Both go on sale to order from 16 October.
The top speaker fires from the front and the bottom one from the back, so opening the device puts one on either side of the fold for stereo. It is the best arrangement available to a foldable. Dolby Atmos playback.
No power adapter. Storage 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB. Ships with iOS 27.1.
$800 above iPhone 18 Pro, $700 above 18 Pro Max, and only $100 above Galaxy Z Fold 8 in the US. Outside the US the premium over the Fold 8 is much larger: £300 in the UK, €340 in France, C$600 in Canada, A$800 in Australia. India is the most extreme gap.
For a first-generation foldable, in a category where $1,800 to $2,000 is the going rate, $1,999 lands lower than the run-up suggested it would.
Pricing is not uniform across Europe: France and Germany differ by €40 at the base tier.
First wave includes Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Türkiye, UAE, the UK, the US and Vietnam. Buy at apple.com, Apple Store locations (every store will have it to see in person), select carriers and partner stores.
iPhone Duo ships five weeks after iPhone 18 Pro. Analysts attribute the gap to manufacturing constraints on early production, so supply is expected to be tight at launch.
0% APR on the 256GB model. Requires AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon at checkout. Always unlocked. Taxes and shipping accrue the card's variable APR.
24-month lease $57.99–$92.81; 12-month $82.99–$132.81, excluding tax and trade-in. Replaces the iPhone Upgrade Programme. A consumer lease, not a purchase: return the device to close it; early termination may cost substantially. Many customers will never own the device outright.
US, for iPhone 8 Plus or newer. UK: £25–£855 for iPhone SE (2nd gen) or newer. 0% financing available in both markets.
The folding 7.6-inch display, the second 5.4-inch display, a titanium frame with Ceramic Shield both sides, Split View, Apple Pencil support and the dual-battery system. It costs you the telephoto lens, the variable aperture, Face ID and five weeks of waiting.

The 2× is a crop from the 48MP main sensor. Zoom tops out at a 4× optical-quality range and 10× digital. iPhone 18 Pro keeps a real telephoto.
iPhone 18 Pro has a six-blade ƒ/1.48–ƒ/4 aperture with manual aperture and shutter controls. Duo is fixed at ƒ/1.6.
Touch ID works identically open or closed and Apple Watch unlock helps, but there are no attention-aware features and app authentication behaves differently.
Straightforward in most developed markets, but a real inconvenience for travellers who buy local prepaid SIMs.
At 254 g it is heavier than iPhone 18 Pro Max, and 53 g heavier than Galaxy Z Fold 8.
It ships on 23 October, five weeks after iPhone 18 Pro, and supply is expected to be tight.
Rated for 24 hours of mixed use, against 36 hours of video on iPhone 18 Pro and 45 on the Pro Max.
This is a first-generation product built around a moving part, and no long-term durability data exists for it yet.
Apple Intelligence is also unavailable in China. For a device positioned around AI, that is a significant regional gap.
Hiding the camera keeps the inner display unbroken, but image quality is what pays for it: the footage it produces is visibly poor even in good light. The industry tried under-display cameras and moved back to cutouts for exactly this reason. A hole-punch and a better sensor would have been the smarter trade.
Teardowns and independent durability testing after the 23 October launch will fill most of these gaps.
iPhone Duo is not a flawless first attempt, but it has a great deal going for it. For anyone who wanted a foldable without leaving iOS, this is the first time that has been an option at all.
You can tolerate another year. A second-generation Duo would likely address the telephoto gap, possibly Face ID, and benefit from a year of real-world hinge data.
Apple's first foldable iPhone: a tablet in your pocket.
From $1,999 for 256GB in the US, rising to $3,199 for 2TB.
Pre-orders open 16 October 2026 at 5 a.m. PT. It ships 23 October 2026.
No. It uses Touch ID built into the side button. You can also unlock it with an Apple Watch.
No dedicated telephoto lens. The 2× telephoto is a crop from the 48MP main sensor.
No. The Duo is eSIM-only in every market worldwide.
Hard to spot and very difficult to feel, thanks to the matte nano-texture finish. Not completely invisible, though.
Expect at least 200,000 folds — around 100 opens a day for five years, which is the current standard for the class. Oppo rates the Find N6 at 600,000.
Yes, Apple Pencil (USB-C), on both displays. Support arrives later in 2026, not at launch.
Star White and Night Sky.
254 g, 5 g heavier than iPhone 18 Pro Max and 53 g heavier than Galaxy Z Fold 8. 5.2 mm open, 11.3 mm closed.
IP68 rated, up to 6 metres for 30 minutes. Water resistance is not permanent and degrades with wear.
The A20 Pro: a 2 nm chip with a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine — the same silicon as iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. RAM is expected to be 12GB, the amount the full Siri AI feature set requires.
Up to 24 hours of typical mixed use. Up to 44 hours of video on the outer display alone, or 31 hours on the inner display.
No. The box has the phone and a 1-metre USB-C cable.
Yes. Split View, a first for iPhone. You can also open two windows of the same app and save app pairs.
No. It launches in English only, in beta, on 14 September 2026, with more languages in October. It is not available in the EU at launch, and Apple Intelligence is not available in China.
Probably not in the first few weeks. Folding display production is the bottleneck, and the five-week gap after iPhone 18 Pro points the same way. Order on 16 October, when pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT, if you want one near launch.
Apple's first-generation hardware tends to age well — the M1 MacBook Air is still an excellent machine years after launch. Duo is built on proven parts: the same A20 Pro as iPhone 18 Pro, a titanium frame and IP68 sealing. If the folding format suits how you use a phone, it is a sound buy.
